Graphic Novel Research

What is a Graphic Novel?

Graphic novels are sometimes called long comic books. They usually cover fictional material in comic book form — through the use of sequential illustrations. [1]

Graphic novels use a lot of pictures and annotations in the form of speech bubbles, thought bubbles or each slide will have a caption at the top of the slide. This allows the author to make the characters look like they are speaking.

Graphic novels are printed using the same material and methods of that a printed book is. They are sold in bookstores rather then in newsstands. Over the years libraries have started to accept graphic novels as resource material, they were once ignored and seen as comic books [2]

What is Sequential art?

Sequential art is the term that is often used with comics, however other forms of art fall into the umbrella term including, animation, storyboarding, children's book illustration, and game design [3]

How do you write a Graphic novel?

There are many ways you can write a graphic novel, first off you need an idea of what your story is going to be, you then need to start storyboarding this story, after you have done this you need to decide what will be the best way to get your story across. By this I mean are you going to take pictures or will you draw pictures?

If you are taking pictures, you are going to need to visualise this in your head before you go out and get snap happy, you will need a location, photography equipment, shot list and storyboards. Once you have all of this and have taken your photographs, how are you going to manipulate the image within photoshop, think about what you have to do to make your image look like something you are trying to portray.

Graphic novels aren't comics, therefore they don't need to be in a cartoon style, think about this when you are changing your images within photoshop.

What are Graphic novels used for?

Graphic novels a lot of use they are often used in schools and libraries. Often children feel intimidated by a word heavy book, however if this book can be shrunk down into a graphic novel children will be more inclined to read it because it has pictures in which will capture the child's eye.

Mostly they are used to tell a story through art, this captures the readers eye more and often helps them take it in and remember it rather then read it on paper in black and white.

Type of Graphic novels

There a six types of graphic novels these create the genre

Superhero Stories;
Often these books will contain a character or characters familiar to readers
Examples of these are

  • Superman
  • Batman
  • Spiderman
  • X-Men
  • + More
Human Interest Story
These stories can cover a broad range of subjects, but are similar to traditional fiction stories.[4]

Manga
These have stemmed from anime comics[4]

Adaptations or Spinoffs
These are about well known characters adapted into graphic form.[4]

Satire
This form of graphic novel questions political systems and social mores.[4]

Non-fiction
Although not an novel itself these still provide a narrative in nature, and told in pictorial form, thus making them graphic novels.[4]

The type of Graphic Novel I will be 'writing' is more of an Human Interest Story then anything else.

What is a Human Interest Story?

A human interest story is a feature story that discusses a person or people in a emotional way. It allows readers to see the people and their problems, concerns, or achievements in a way that brings about interest or sympathy in the reader or viewer.

With my storyboards I have tried to invoke these types of things however, because they are very rough, and not very well drawn, its hard to understand and I can't get this across however when I put the final piece together It should be much better and start invoking emotion, I haven't a specific emotion I want to invoke however I will try if anything to provide a more comical feel to my comic.

These are more heartfelt stories, then anything else, however because it involves humans it makes them Human Interest Stories.

Examples of human interest graphic novels

All these a Human interest graphic novels, you learn something from each of these, and because they are educational, you have to have some sort of interest in the topic itself to actually pick the book up and start reading from it.

For this assignment we are required to make the graphic novel this meant I needed to know what a graphic novel looked like on the inside so that I can design mine around this, reading comics myself I was able to take pictures from them and use them as a reference to my design.

There is a difference between design in each book, however they still all look visually amazing, I want to mix this designs within my work.

As you can see 3 different styles, each creating there own sort of effect on the reader, my personal favourite is the 3rd one which reads in tiles. But the other 2 are nice as well.

Graphic novels can be drawn in all sorts of styles they range from a combination of cartoony and realistic, to stylised realism and the fairly realistic. The style that these are the combination of cartoony and realistic. Meaning they could be made into films and you can picture what they would look like.

Although I only wanted the comic book look and our images are not meant to be in a comic book style because they have to show off our photography skills.
